When we purchased our GE over-the-range microwave in October, 2010, we did extensive research and found that GE microwaves seemingly provided the best value for a mid-range unit. The model number we purchased JVM1740SP1SS. The serial number is DT948473B. We had been very happy with its performance and readily recommended GE products to our family and friends.

On August 14, 2012, however, the magnetron failed. The unit continues to function in every other regard, except that it does not perform the one task a microwave should: heat food.

We have been through the owner's manual and see that GE only provides a one-year limited warranty from the date of original purchase. We have the unfortunate luck of having bought our microwave from a local Sears two years ago and thus, have been told by our friend Gail at the GE appliance Answer Center that the unit is now out of warranty.

I waited for more than an hour and a half on hold on August 16, 2012, to speak with someone in GE customer care and was told we could pay $100 service fee and get a 50% discount on parts and labor or buy a replacement unit, same model, at a $70 discount.

This is completely unacceptable. GE should be willing to replace the magnetron and restore our unit to working order at no cost to us. We are in our mid-thirties and have many decades (we hope) of appliance-buying ahead of us, as do our friends and family. As very dissatisfied customers we will never purchase another GE appliance again and will counsel our many friends and family to do the same.

What part of guarantee do you not understand. Has one year warranty and now two years and your warranty is over. That is just the breaks.
