I installed a GE water softener in my new home Nov/2007. Recently while on vacation the Bypass Valve ( which has never been moved from the open position) snapped in the middle of the valve.
This resulted in the 2 halves coming out and water flooded my basement storage room. This should never have happened as the valve was never used and a straight rod should never snap in the middle unless it was faulty to begin with.
GE refused to replace the valve as it was more than 1 year old and out of warranty. This is poor customer relations as all I wanted was a replacement for a faulty part and not compensation for damages which cost a lot more than their miserable part!
