My only satisfaction out of a disappointing purchase of G.E. PSCS5TGXCFSS is to post a complaint...G.E.

repair service is available to position itself between you and "the higher ups" to prevent any restitution for a mechanically flawed refrigerator which sounds like an elephant with indegestion for 20-30 minutes every hour it operates...but guess what........ "it's normal", the two most dreaded words you'll ever hear when there is a problem...I too suggest Kenmore, Whirlpool, or Kitchen Aid, which uses a different technology.

Stay as far away from G.E. as possible...it has become a "builders grade appliance" and believe me that is not a good thing.

I am a technician of around 30 years and I cannot figure out what is wrong with this terrible machine. I've replaced everything but the compressor. I bet that wouldn't even work!

Eventually we will put them out of the appliance business.

OK,

I seem to have achieved success - the customer advocate will research the part number on the mother board (she can't find it in her references), and once located, she will order and ship to me. She didn't ask for a credit card so I'm thinking they know they have a problem, and are willing to placate the customer with the most reasonable fix.

I have no doubts the new mother board will fail (if it is made in China), but it should give me about a year's worth of service before I start losing food due to the swings in temperature I'm currently experiencing.

Finally got hold of a "consumer advocate" (1-80*-***-****) after 49 minutes: she asked if I would I like to have a repairman sent out.

No.

I told her I wanted a motherboard for reasons explaind in my previous post. She let me know that my model (PSS26L - series ) has not had a service recall notice, however the PSS26M - series did. She's checking further....

Will let you know what happens in teh next post.

Dear Claeys,

After my side-by-side (Model PSS26LSRESS, bout in December 2008) started acting up in early 2011, I looked online for reviews and found out there is nothing but despair. Mine acts up - stops working, refrgerator freezes and freezer thaws. Ice in the icemaker bucket melts and leaves stalagtite icicles on lower shelves. Couldn't make sense of it. Reading the reviews I have found that: 1) service calls are expensive and will not solve any problem, 2) replacement parts (fans motors, valves, etc.)are expensive and won't solve the problem, 3) calls to service department won't solve the problem, but will waste your time.

I believe the design is the issue, specifically the mother board.

I suspect the boards were made in China, using salvaged American components.

As for the entire unit being "assembled in Mexico", I have no problems. The unit as a whole is put together well. I have no problems with the noise that others do, however, I keep my windows open all year round (yes, I live in Hawaii), and the noise must be drowned out by other sounds in our neighborhood..

Anyway, back to the motherboard: if you have degraded components on the mother board, it can't respond properly to the signals coming from the sensors (not just the temperature sensors).

When my fridge acts up, such as after a power failure, I have to go to my circuit breaker panel and trip the refrigetor breaker to shut off power to the fridge. I usually have to leave it with power off for about 3 hours, and then I can restart it and it will work like a champ - for about a month.

Another example - during Thanksgiving, I bought much food and put it in both sides - the sensors responded to the temperature change, but the mother board couldn't resolve the issue, and I came close to losing a couple of hundred dollars worth of food.

Most recently, we had another brief power outage due to high winds, so I powered down the fridge for about 2 hours - didn't work; next day I powered down for 5 hours - didn't work; next day another 5 hours - didn't work. Today, I powered down and opened both doors to warm the interior on both sides. I tossed out my frozen fruits and veggies that were on the refrigerator side and after about 3 hours I closed the doors and reset the breaker. The problem resolved itself, it made ice within an hour.

So - I'm currently on endless hold with GE Consumer affairs (1-80*-***-****). I would like to get a replacement mother board that should last for about a year before it starts acting up again. I do not expect to have to pay for it. It is faulty - needs to be made in America. Wish GE could own up to it, but it might cut into their corporate profits, and shareholders would resent that.

Wish you luck, and hope my story helps.
